Christine Varsane Chiocchio – Artist Statement

ChristineChiocchioChristine works in a variety of media, including painting, photography, and carving. Working in a studio overlooking the harbor in Stony Creek offers ample opportunity for Christine to draw inspiration. Her work is influenced by nature, the sea, and other cultures. She also enjoys “finding” art in unusual places…the tip of a burnt match, a coiled rope, a rusty bowl…all provide opportunities for expression.

Being an artist is not merely an occupation for Christine, but a lifestyle. Her work serves as a form of communication. The images that she sees become her words to convey an emotion, capture a moment in time, create a dialogue, stir a memory, or a smile. What Christine cannot convey through words, she conveys through art.

Through traveling, Christine expands her “vocabulary” by learning about other people and places. When she returns back to the studio, she is then able to take what she has learned and experienced and put it into her work. For instance, after a trip to New Zealand, Christine was motivated to learn the art of creating jewelry from carved bone and other found objects.

Christine also enjoys teaching art classes across the street from her home studio at Stony Creek Studios. As she appreciates her students’ progress and enthusiasm for learning, it enriches her own artistic experience.
